Saint-Marcel is a beautiful village located at 625 m above sea level on the north exposed slopes of Aosta Valley. The 3rd and 5th classes of the primary school decided to take part in the project of building an observation site comprising three species: birch, ash and hazel. All species are located along a path that follows the course of a small brook. Because of its northern exposition, the amount of sunlight that reaches the site is very limited, especially in periods close to winter, both in spring and in autumn, and the temperatures are generally lower than in the adjacent areas, which are sunnier, humidity is higher, as well as the duration of snow cover.
"The experience gained from classes through participation in this project was undoubtedly positive. The children were enthusiastic about the topic and were able to satisfy their curiosity and their need to learn directly through active involvement. The field trips were always an important opportunity to combine phenological observations with direct study of topics covered in class." Fortunata and Irene - Teachers at Saint-Marcel
Riva phenological garden: “PhenoALP phenological observations were very enjoyable. We chose to make our observations in a very cold area of our village, where the sun remains hidden behind the mountains during the long winter months. Despite these difficulties, we always made our field trips with great enthusiasm, because we felt we really were young scientists. Back in class, our teachers reflected on what we had observed and in many cases we drew and described the trees of the observation site. This gave rise to the idea of making some big posters with our drawings and turning the site into a phenological garden, so that all those who come to Riva Garden can try making phenological observations. Come and visit it!" 3rd and 5th classes of Saint-Marcel primary school
