The action Pheno_plantes  deals with alpine vegetation phenology and one of its aim is to develop climate change indicators using plants phenology.

Regarding forest species (Picea abies, Larix decidua, Betula pubescens, Betula pendula, Fraxinus excelsior, Sorbus aucuparia, Syringa vulgaris, Corylus avellana, Primula veris, Tussilago farfara) the experience arising from the PhenoClim is transferred to Aosta Valley. Observations of both the beginning and the end of the growth season are done following a common protocol by specialists, volunteers, protected areas and primary schools on both sides of the western Alps.

Regarding alpine grassland phenology we are developing a new protocol (click here) focused on the seven most common growth life forms of alpine pastures: Cyperaceae, Poaceae (palatable and non palatable), evergreen and deciduous shrubs, Asteraceae and Leguminous. For each group, quantitative variables (e.g. leaves length, plant length, ...) are monitored during the growth season on 6 observation sites. Other techniques used to monitor grassland phenology are based on weekly nadiral images collected with commercial digital cameras, visual estimations of greening percentage and canopy height measurement. Our goal is to define a protocol suitable for long term observations based on a reasonable compromise between the quality of the collected data and the heaviness of the field work.

Data collected during the project will be analysed using phenological models in order to try to outline the control that climate and complex topography have on alpine plant phenology
